Tangier City Port :

Your Gateway to New Horizons

Presentation

Following the High Royal Instructions, the development project for the conversion and requalification of the Tangier Ville port area, made possible by the transfer of maritime links to the new Tangier Med port, aims to restore the ‘City of the Straits’ to its historic place among the great Mediterranean cities and to make the port of Tangier Ville one of the leading yachting and cruise ports in the Mediterranean.

Under the terms of an agreement signed on 03 March 2010, the State entrusted the Société d’Aménagement pour la Reconversion de la Zone Portuaire de Tanger (SAPT) with implementing the Tanger City Port Area Conversion and development project (starting now referred to as the ‘Conversion Project’).

As part of the structuring of this conversion project, SAPT and the Agence Nationale des Ports (ANP) have set up a joint subsidiary called Société de Gestion du Port de Tanger (SGPTV), a limited company whose main purpose is, on the one hand, to build and develop the infrastructure required for cruise activities.

Secondly, the management and operation of these infrastructures within the framework of a concession agreement for the management of this port concluded between the ANP and the SGPTV for 50 years, starting on 1st October 2012.

The Concession Perimeter comprises all port infrastructures and superstructures, including :

Building new quays and jetties by concessionaire while utilizing the existing ones

The stretch of water adjacent to the said quays and piers

The existing platforms and networks and those to be built by the concessionaire

The existing superstructures and buildings and those to be built by the concessionaire

The conversion project has two main components :

  • A port component including yachting, cruises, ferries and sea fishing, and
  • An urban component comprising cultural facilities, public spaces, hotels, a convention center, a shopping and entertainment area, a real estate cluster (residential and office), and a cable car designed to improve mobility within the site and its surroundings.

The aim is to position the capital of the Strait as a leading destination for cruise and yachting tourism in the Mediterranean. It will provide the city of Tangier with high-value-added tourism, events, and cultural offering.
The city’s rich history, unique bay, and Medina bordering the port give it a rich architectural heritage, built up from one era to the next and often incorporating influences from elsewhere to create the ‘Tangier Spirit’. The conversion project, which fits harmoniously into the city’s urban landscape, represents a unique opportunity to rebuild the relationship between the city and the port.

The new Fishing Port

Fishing in Tangier is a historic activity. As the fishing port is currently saturated, the project has foreseen an overall improvement of the system in place. The former location of the fishing port constituted an impediment to an optimal conversion of the port because of the health constraints and the difficulties in managing the flows of people and vehicles generated by the activity. The current port offers an optimal conversion.

The new fishing port has been built to solve the existing problems but also to ensure a new optimal space. It leads to improved working conditions, offering professionals of the sector new and modern facilities that meet their expectations .

The fishing port is leaned against the main pier and has 1,900 linear meters of docks, 13 hectares of land and 13 hectares of basin, which is 3 times larger than the old port.

The new fishing port provides an optimal working tool for fishing professionals which will lead to a better development of the fishing sector in the region

The new ferry terminal has been completely refurbished, with a new 2,800 m² space added to the existing 3,500 m². The new terminal comprises a number of components, including a building for administrative operations, a special hall for cruise passengers, a café-restaurant, a Duty-Free shop, security features (new baggage and vehicle scanners to reduce throughput time and increase passenger safety), escalators and lifts to make it easier for passengers to move up and down the terminal.

The new Mosque: covering an area of 1.5 hectares, it houses the large mosque. This esplanade provides a link between the area dedicated to fishing and the rest of the Project. This area will be the first landmark for cruise tourists disembarking at the Port of Tangier

The Village Artisanal of Tangier is a space dedicated to local Moroccan craftsmanship, located in Tangier city port near to the mosque S.A. la princesse Lalla Abla. It’s a place where artisans, especially those specializing in traditional crafts like pottery, sewing, weaving, and leatherwork, work and display their products. This village allows visitors to explore Moroccan craftsmanship, purchase unique handmade items, and gain a deeper understanding of the techniques and traditions passed down through generations.

In addition to showcasing local craftsmanship, the Village Artisanal plays an important role in preserving and promoting Moroccan artisanal heritage for both local and international visitors.
